No Place to Put the Gifts
I had just had a bridal shower and had received many lovely gifts. These beautiful items would have no landing place if we moved into the mission house. It had not been lived in for many decades and though a dreamer could see all the potential, the present condition was dingy, dark and dirty. The words of Jesus responding to the one who said he would follow Him wherever He went took on new meaning as I considered this scenario: “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
A Dirt Hut in Mexico—Or Something Closer
I had a soft spot for missions in my heart and had told God I would live in a dirt hut in Mexico, but I had never imagined that “yes” could be directed to a local assignment. (Plus Mexico sounded warmer than a Toledo January with no furnace!)
My fiance secured his yes to this adventure without hesitation and as he has always been wise, did not pressure me to give mine. George simply asked me to seek the Lord. I had a history with God of praying for the revelation of His will and securing a word from Him that would provide an anchor for my seasons, so I went into prayer in faith that He would meet me.
Big Big House, Big Big Promise
One early morning, I was driving to work, the radio playing softly in the background. A song came on that usually I would turn down, as it wasn’t my favorite, but that day it came with a rush of God’s presence, which filled my car. I listened to the lyrics as they spoke so loudly to me in the moment:
I don’t know if you got some shelter
Say a place to hide
I don’t know if you live with friends
In whom you can confide
I don’t know if you got a family
Say a mom or dad
I don’t know if you feel love at all
But I bet you wish you had
Come and go with me
To my Father’s house
Come and go with me
To my Father’s house
It’s a big big house
With lots and lots a room
A big big table
With lots and lots of food
God spoke to me and said that this was HIS House and that this is the kind of place it would be! He said that He would make all of the provision for the vision. And just like that, I knew in my heart, I had the word to stand on and a promise from my faithful God that if we moved in, He would work everything out.
This part of the story is so important to me. It reveals that He had a plan and a certain atmosphere that He wanted to create. It was His vision. It was His heart.
